Combining ability of tropical maize cultivars in organic and conventional production systems Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Lucimar Rodrigues de; Miranda,Glauco Vieira; DeLima,Rodrigo Oliveira; Souza,Leandro Vagno de; Galvão,João Carlos Cardoso; Santos,Izabel Cristina dos.
The objectives were to identify maize germplasm for the organic productions system and to compare the genetic effects of the grain yield of maize cultivars in organic and conventional production systems. Diallel crosses were made between six maize cultivars and the hybrid combinations were evaluated in conventional and organic production systems. The hybrid combinations produced different grain yields in the two production systems. The interaction between general combining ability and production systems was significant for grain yield, ear height and number of ears. This indicates that the additive genetic effects differ in organic and conventional production systems. The specific combining abilities (SCA) were significant for grain yield and plant height,...

Common bean genotypes for agronomic and market-related traits in VCU trials Scientia Agricola
Chiorato,Alisson Fernando; Carbonell,Sérgio Augusto Morais; Bosetti,Fátima; Sasseron,Graziele Ramos; Lopes,Rodrigo Lorencetti Tunes; Azevedo,Cleber Vinícius Giaretta.
Value for Cultivation and Use (VCU) trials are undertaken when evaluating improved common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) lines, and knowledge of agronomic and market-related traits and disease reaction is instrumental in making cultivar recommendations. This study evaluates the yield, cooking time, grain color and reaction to anthracnose (Colletotrichum lindemuthianum), Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli) and Curtobacterium wilt (Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens) of 25 common bean genotypes derived from the main common bean breeding programs in Brazil. Seventeen VCU trials were carried out in the rainy season, dry season and winter season from 2009 to 2011 in the state of São Paulo. Analyses of grain color and cooking time were...

Comparative proteomics reveals proteins impacted by nitrogen deprivation in wild-type and high lipid-accumulating mutant strains of Tisochrysis lutea ArchiMer
Garnier, Matthieu; Carrier, Gregory; Rogniaux, Helene; Nicolau, Elodie; Bougaran, Gael; Saint-jean, Bruno; Cadoret, Jean-paul.
Understanding microalgal lipid accumulation under nitrogen starvation is of major interest for biomass feedstock, food and biofuel production. Using a domesticated oleaginous algae Tisochrysis lutea, we performed the first comparative proteomic analysis on the wild type strain and a selected lipid over-accumulating mutant. 2-DE analysis was made on these strains cultured in two metabolic conditions, with and without nitrogen deprivation, which revealed significant differences in proteomes according to both strain and nitrogen availability. Mass spectrometry allowed us to identify 37 proteins that were differentially expressed between the two strains, and 17 proteins regulated by nitrogen starvation concomitantly with lipid accumulation. The proteins...

For segmented viruses, rapid genomic and phenotypic changes can occur through the process of reassortment, whereby co-infecting strains exchange entire segments creating novel progeny virus genotypes. However, for many viruses with segmented genomes, this process and its effect on transmission dynamics remain poorly understood. Here, we assessed the consequences of reassortment for selection on viral diversity through time using bluetongue virus (BTV), a segmented arbovirus that is the causative agent of a major disease of ruminants. We analysed ninety-two BTV genomes isolated across four decades from India, where BTV diversity, and thus opportunities for reassortment, are among the highest in the world. Our results point to frequent reassortment and...

Converting to organic farming in France: Is there a selection problem? AgEcon
Latruffe, Laure; Nauges, Celine.
Using a sample of French crop farms during the 1999-2006 period, we test whether less technically efficient farmers are more likely to engage in organic farming in order to benefit from conversion subsidies. Despite some limitations in our data, we find no evidence of such selection effect. On the contrary, our estimation results indicate that more technically efficient farmers are more likely to convert to organic farming. This finding is found to be robust to the method of calculation of efficiency scores, either parametric or non-parametric. This study also confirms that farm’s characteristics (education, farm size and legal status) and farmers’ practices under conventional farming do impact the probability of conversion to OF.

Déclin de la taille-aux-âges des sardines (Sardina pilchardus) : diminution de la croissance et/ou disparition sélective des individus à croissance rapide ArchiMer
Gentil, Claire.
In many exploited species, we see a decrease of size-at-ages. Two main hypotheses have been proposed to explain this decline: a decline in growth and the selective mortality of the individuals with fast growth both being due to environmental changes or/and to fishing. The sardine Sardina pilchardus of the Bay of Biscay is a good model for the study of this phenomenon because of its high sensitivity to the environmental variations and it sustains two large French and Spanish fisheries. The aim of this study is to measure the changes in the growth of sardines, by the reading of otoliths, and to understand mechanisms involved in this process. The main stages of this study are described in this report: extraction of otoliths during PELGAS, otoliths...

Decline of genetic variability in a captive population of Pacific white shrimp Penaeus (Litopenaeus) vannamei using microsatellite and pedigree information Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Vela Avitúa,Sergio; Montaldo,Hugo H; Márquez Valdelamar,Laura; Campos Montes,Gabriel R; Castillo Juárez,Héctor.
Background: The objective of this study was to estimate the decline of genetic variability and the changes in effective population size in three shrimp populations. One was a wild population collected at several points in the Mexican Pacific Ocean. The other two populations were different generations (7 and 9) from a captive population selected for growth and survival. Microsatellite markers and pedigree were both used to assess genetic variability and effective population size. Results: Using 26 loci, both captive populations showed a decline in the expected heterozygosity (20%) and allelic diversity indices (48 to 91%) compared to the wild population (P < 0.05). The studied captive populations did not differ significantly from each other regarding...

Designs and model effects definitions in the initial stage of a plant breeding program PAB
Souza,Emanuel Fernando Maia de; Peternelli,Luiz Alexandre; Barbosa,Márcio Henrique Pereira.
The objective of this work was to compare the relative efficiency of initial selection and genetic parameter estimation, using augmented blocks design (ABD), augmented blocks twice replicated design (DABD) and group of randomised block design experiments with common treatments (ERBCT), by simulations, considering fixed effect model and mixed model with regular treatment effects as random. For the simulations, eight different conditions (scenarios) were considered. From the 600 simulations in each scenario, the mean percentage selection coincidence, the Pearsons´s correlation estimates between adjusted means for the fixed effects model, and the heritability estimates for the mixed model were evaluated. DABD and ERBCT were very similar in their comparisons...

Development of a bioassay to quantify the ricin toxin content of castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) seeds - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v34i4.11284 Agronomy
Demant, Carlos Alberto Rauer; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho”; Auld, Dick; Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas, United States; Demant, Aline Rodrigues de Mello; Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas, United States.
In this study, we developed a bioassay to quantify the ricin toxin content of castor bean seeds. Existing quantification methods do not always reflect actual toxicity of the seeds analyzed, which may present lower ricin content even though they are more toxic than seeds presenting a higher content of ricin. This is because these methods actually measure the addition of ricin RCA, which is a compound less toxic than pure ricin. We decided to use in this study, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, which has been widely used by the pharmaceutical industry. We tested two strains of C. elegans using different methods in 8 experiments. We examined 4 methods of extracting the ricin complex and 3 methods of exposing the nematodes. Among the nematode strains and...
